You take off your shoes after a long day and there it is—again. That nagging itch, that burning sensation, that “something’s-not-right” feeling creeping between your toes. You assume it’s athlete’s foot (again). Over-the-counter cream, a few nights of application, and maybe it gets better... for a while.
But what if it doesn’t? What if it keeps coming back? What if this isn’t athlete’s foot at all?
Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is incredibly common. It’s a fungal infection, and like all fungi, it loves warm, damp places—like the inside of your shoes. Symptoms? Itching, peeling, redness, and that distinctive “must-get-these-socks-off” discomfort.
But—and this is important—not all foot pain, itch, or irritation is athlete’s foot. Misdiagnosing a more serious issue as a simple fungal infection can delay proper treatment and prolong your pain.
At Foot & Ankle Associates of Southern NH, we’ve seen it all. Here’s what else could be going on...
1. Eczema or Dermatitis
Redness, flaking, and itchiness? Sounds familiar—but it might not be fungal. Allergic reactions, irritants (like dyes or materials in shoes), or even stress can trigger skin conditions that mimic athlete’s foot. Creams won’t help if you’re treating the wrong problem.
2. Psoriasis
Psoriasis can appear on the feet, causing thick, scaly skin and cracking. It’s not contagious, not fungal, and definitely not something an athlete’s foot cream will fix.
3. Neuropathy
Burning, tingling, or numbness in your feet? Especially if you have diabetes or circulatory issues, you might be dealing with nerve damage—not a skin infection. This needs medical attention, fast.
4. Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis)
Sometimes the problem’s not the skin at all, but the toenails. If your nails are discolored, brittle, or lifting, the infection may have gone deeper. Topical creams won’t reach it.
5. Bacterial Infections
Painful, hot, swollen areas might indicate a bacterial infection—not fungal at all. These can become serious quickly and require antibiotics.
Here’s the truth: when it comes to foot pain, guessing won’t cut it.
